Youth is recognized as a strategic priority by the Libyan government, and placed at the heart of peacebuilding efforts in Libya. UNFPA strived during the last two years to promote young people’s commitment to, and engagement with peacebuilding. This was done by fostering awareness on and commitment to Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth Peace and Security, reaching over 1,000 young women and men in 11 municipalities all over Libya, and conducting focus group discussions with about 500 young leaders.

UNFPA invested also in expanding the Y-PEER Network of peer educators, which currently includes more than 800 members across the Libyan territory. In addition, UNFPA is working with the Ministry of Planning to design a national youth strategy and develop a programmatic action plan. UNFPA aims at strengthening youth engagement in policy dialogue, to achieve the inclusion of adolescents and youth priorities in relevant national and local policies, while increasing opportunities for adolescents and youth to exercise leadership and participate in networks that promote sustainable development, humanitarian actions, peace and security.
