UNFPA’s gender-based violence programme in Libya aims to promote the rights of all women and girls to live free of violence and abuse. The programme is providing a set of services and activities in different regions throughout the country including GBV services, psychosocial support, livelihood activities, awareness raising, social media campaigns and provision of dignity/hygiene kits.

UNFPA has established 4 Women Safe Spaces in the East, West and South of Libya, where women and girls are learning livelihood skills and receive sensitization messages on reproductive health and gender-based violence. Safe Spaces provide remote and in-person services to women and girls through awareness sessions on gender-related topics along with livelihood and life skills training.

UNFPA has also supported in building the capacities of the service providers in collaboration with line ministries involved to ensure GBV multi-sectoral services provided to the survivors. UNFPA has been helping to structure a solid basis of intervention involving main governmental institutions and actors, including the Ministry of Social Affairs, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Justice and Women Empowerment & Support Units.

UNFPA’s helpline “1417” provides psychosocial support, legal counseling and referral to the immediate health services for the people in need.

UNFPA has conducted the first-ever GBV situation analysis in Libya and is working with partners to support the establishment of a GBV Information Management System.

UNFPA together with UNWOMEN and Human Rights Section in UNSMIL, extended technical and logistic support to the Ministry of women and networks of women activists in Libya to draft a bill of a law to prevent violence against women (VAW) and provide multisectoral chain of services to survivors.
