Protecting women and girls in Libya

  • Over one million people in Libya are in need of lifesaving protections interventions throughout the country, with an estimated half of them being women. For the protection of the most vulnerable women, UNFPA established five women’s safe spaces, where women and young people (are learning, among others, livelihood skills) are learning livelihoods skills and receive sensitization messages on reproductive health and gender based violence.

Given women’s need for services to address the consequences of gender-based violence, UNFPA is responding by providing psychosocial support and counseling to survivors of gender-based violence. To date, more than 10,000 women have benefitted from these services. The Azjar center gives opportunity to women of Ubari to open up about their concerns, share their success stories and raise awareness on the protection of women and children.
